Kevin or anybody else who knows, lets hit up a skiing weekend backcountry in January/early feb. Do you guys use skins, or else how do you do it? I have sleds, a ski chalet near searchmont, and some free time. I know hartman will come...

I am in for some back country. I use skins and am still beginner stasis. After last year it will be nice to get out. Keep me posted I am off every Monday and Tuesday. Unless I work at the mine. I am heading up to Searchmount this weekend for some lift skiing with the whole fam damily.

Hey Johnny, Have you been to Carp at all this year? Is the road plowed or do you need a snowmachine? Is there a descent base underneath the powder? We should do some back-country skiing/boarding soon.

Kev:
We skied into Batch from the Research Institute, did a couple of runs and skied out. Went in around 10 and came out in the dark. The snow was about a half metre of powder on top of a half metre of denser snow, just about perfect. Doesn't look like the Carp road will be plowed this year so a machine would be necessary for access there. Give me a little advanced notice if you come and I'll borrow my Dad's Polaris. I know you snowboarder types can't walk very far without falling on your heads.....

I'm planning on going on the 28th of December for five days. Are you busy then? I have a snowmachine of my own now, but it would be a lot easier if I didn't have to bring it with me. Let me know what you're doing.

Kevin, I have two sleds we could use when you come up, where are you going to stay? My place at Searchmont is always an option just so you know. Do you guys use skins, or just hike it?

You have to use skins or snowshoes. Imagine trying to hike through six feet of soft snow up a small mountain. Its not going to happen. Believe me...I tried. You should get some alpine touring bindings if you don't care for tele. Or get yourself a splitboard. When are you going to be back in the Soo? I can leave december 28th.

I am already back, I have been out at searchmont, and the snow is great. Anybody have any suggestions on a good set of skins to buy, or else I will just get the MEC ones. That also goes for touring bindings.

Get ones with toe and tail clips. There a lot easier to take care of and they stay on better.

looks like I will be using snow shoes, I don't think I will be able to get the right equipment together for this break. Kevin let me know some finalized dates, and if you are staying with me when you come up. You are more than welcome to stay over at my place at searchmont. just need some confirmation for some other plans. happy holidays
