River Advocacy & River Information

Hi all,

I am posting here, with permission from Mike, to ask for your assistance. I am VP of Whitewater Ontario and a co-organiser of McMaster Whitewater paddling club.

I have been putting together a river wiki for rivers in Ontario. www.whitewaterontario.ca/rivers/index.php/Main_Page It would be great to include some more river information for rivers in your area. If any of you have any river information or flow information you would be willing to share on the wiki I would be very grateful. I always credit my sources and as it is a wiki, it is possible to edit everything. Even just a description of your favourite run with some put it take out information would be fantastic. Email to ljayde2003 at hotmail dot com or post here and I will get it up on the wiki.

I am also co-chair of the newly formed Whitewater Ontario Advocacy committee www.whitewaterontario.ca/news/ap-news.html of around 12 members across Ontario which has been working hard this year on several access issues namely the Petawawa, the Salmon, the Crowe, the Black and Moore Creek. We have been able to secure $5 from each WO membership to go towards Advocacy issues which is fantastic, this is an area that really needs attention in Ontario.

Are you aware of any access issues in your area or rivers at risk? If anyone would like to be involved in river advocacy and would like to sit on this committee we have a monthly teleconference and there is always a lot going on.

Stinson Playspot
Wanapitae River

Sweet little local spot 1/2 hr east of Sudbury.

Hwy 17 East turn north or your left at Stinson hydro Road if you came via Sudbury, you will be in a passing lane so clearly signal your intent and tap the brakes if someone clearly is not paying attention...
Stay on Stinson Hyrdo road for 1km, once you see the water which is the top of the dam stay left looking for a trail.
Follow the trail for 1km and you have made it.
Depending on the level we play either upstream or downstream of the trail Plan (ski doo)

This is open all year round.

Playspot
Quellet Rapids 40min south of Sudbury
French River
Similar feature to Stinson with better eddy access for beginners.

Via HWY 69 south of Sudbury and 5min east of Alban or 64 from Noelville roughly the same time
Turn south on Green Bay Road
At intersection turn left, drive through campground and small summer cottages to the Bailey Bridge this should take about 5mins from the hwy.
We normally park on the south side of bridge.
From the Bailey bridge look downstream and you should see the playspot.
Open all year!


McGivers Scary Play
Mississagi River
West of Blind River were hwy 17 makes a bend, you can see this from the hwy

Look before you leap! Looks easier from shore!!!!!!!!!!
BIG and TRASHY for good paddlers only, watch the ledge pour over and stay away or you will get worked, in high water the eddy will suck you in from wayyyy out.
I use the eddy to bring me in, and I ensure that I am right at the pit, otherwise paddle into the main flow and try again.
This is native land so be kind and polite.

Aux Sable River day trip
1hour West of Sudbury
Turn north at Chutes Provincial Park and drive for 2-3km there is a bend in the river and a pole line this is your take out.

Drive another 4km +/- you should see a blocked off trail on your right on a flat straight chunk of land. This is your put in.

This is a super day trip with one most everybody will portage falls and a few other need to scout drops...everything on this river has been run, sometimes successful other times have cost gear and or pride.

If and I mean if you have canoe head buddies there is a good trip 3 day trip starting about 40miles upstream around East Bull Lake, the canoes start up north and end up at the kayakers put-in after two days and if whitewater capable can now join you for the third day.
